As the weather closes in for the winter, a quality insulating base layer is one of the key parts of keeping warm when you are out fishing in the cold weather.
A base layer top acts as a “second skin”; this insulating layer gives your upper body an extra layer between you and the cold.
So join me as I take a deep dive into the Thermajohn base layer thermal shirt.
Thermajohn Thermal Base Layer Cold Weather Shirt – My Best Overall Pick!
For your insulating layer, the Thermajohn long-sleeve base layer is perfect! It’s made of 92% polyester and 8% spandex and will keep all of the moisture off your body and keep you out fishing for as long as you would like!
As you know, many of my picks for the best fishing clothing for the cold weather, I rarely pick those high-priced range commercial name items. So the same applies to base layers!
The Thermajohn base layer fishing shirt is not only a great quality product, but it’s very competitively priced.
You’re getting a wonderful insulating shirt! While it’s not overly thick, it does the job and will keep you out on the water for an extended amount of time. It’s a tight-fitting but breathable material and provides that sweat-wicking capability, insulation, and temperature regulation that are the basic needs of a good thermal layer shirt.
When fishing in cold weather, your base layer has to allow flexible movement. The Thermjohn should be sized to give you a body-hugging fit, but you will find that when you cast, reach out for bait, tend to the fish, etc., you’ll still have the full range of motion and freedom to move without any restrictions.
What I like about this inner base layer shirt is the great ability of heat retention coupled with the soft fleece lining layer. It never fails to keep me warm and, at the same time, feeling comfortable. Thermajohn has the additional foresight not to place a tag on the inner collar, which means you don’t have the “itchy” feeling from the label material.
They are available in eight sizes and five colors, charcoal, grey, black, hunter green, and navy. My personal choice of color is hunter green!
If you are looking for the ladies’ version of this shirt, check out the Thermajane thermal shirts for the winter. The women’s options come in even more color options and eight size options.
Finally, I love the price tag! It’s not the cheapest nor overpriced, but it’s a practical, good quality, and a great value-for-money base layer that is perfect for those winter fishing days.
